Alva Public Schools | Adult/Post-Secondary

Alva High School, home of the Goldbugs, is located on the northwest side of the community. A mural depicting the "Alva Goldbug, a symbol of excellence" was completed on the south side of the newly constructed gymnasium in June of 2000.

The teacher-student ratios meet criteria set by the Oklahoma State Department of Education with 20 students per teacher in kindergarten through third grade. Fourth and fifth grade ratios are at 22 students per teacher and the high school is at about 15 students per teacher, providing ample individual instruction.

Each school is equipped with computer labs, as well as an on-site counselor.

A breakfast program, utilized by approximately 90 children, is in place for kindergarten through the 12th grades to ensure the children receive proper nutrition before beginning each day.

The Alva Independent School District employs seven administrators, 88 teachers and 59 support personnel. Enrollment is 1,040 students kindergarten through 12th grades.

The various facilities include three elementary learning centers, Washington (pre-school through first grade), Longfellow (second and third grades), and Lincoln (fourth and fifth grades). The Alva Middle School houses the sixth, seventh and eighth grades with an enrollment of 246 while Alva High School is home to freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors with 296 in attendance.

The high school emphasizes math, science, English, social studies and computer technology with more than 85 units of credit in its curriculum. Two advanced placement courses are offered--calculus and chemistry. Electives include speech, drama, and debate, as well as show choirs, band, academic bowl teams, agriculture and nine athletic programs.

Seventy-five percent of the graduates attend college or specialized education and many Alva students have been named as National Merit Scholars and Academic All-State. Overall, state testing indicates Alva students consistently score above the national and state averages.

In conjunction with the Northwest Technology Center, career programs are made available to those attending Alva High School.

The Alva Community places extraordinary importance on education. A $2.9 million bond project provided for the building of a new gymnasium and a science complex at the high school and media centers at the elementary schools. A middle school was built through a $2.3 million bond that passed in 1989.
